Abstract

Essential tremor affects almost 1 % of the population and may be very debilitating. Much is still unclear with regard to its pathophysiology, environmental factors and genetic causes. The diagnosis of essential tremor most likely encompasses several different conditions. In this article we provide an overview of essential tremor, pharmacological and neurosurgical treatment, as well as a review of the proposals for new definitions for tremor in general, and for essential tremor in particular.
