Design of outcome studies of community-acquired pneumonia

Semin Respir Infect. 1994 Sep;9(3):214-9.

Abstract

This review deals with design, description, and analysis of outcome studies of pneumonia. A review of studies of mortality from pneumonia shows deficiencies in reporting in several areas including description of exclusion/inclusion criteria, information on patients not enrolled in the study, referral patterns, and statistical analysis. Very few studies have evaluated outcomes other than mortality. Recommendations are provided for studies that evaluate a broad set of outcomes in patients with pneumonia.
