Traumatic rupture of a hepatic hydatid cyst

S Afr J Surg. 2002 Aug;40(3):103-5.

Abstract

Rupture of liver hydatid cysts usually occurs spontaneously. However, it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of the acute abdomen following trauma in endemic areas. Simple cystectomy and lavage with scolicidal solution is the procedure of choice. Coupled with pharmacological therapy and long-term follow-up, a low recurrence rate can be achieved.
