Technique for emergency medicine bedside ultrasound identification of a radiolucent foreign body

J Emerg Med. 2003 Apr;24(3):303-8. doi: 10.1016/s0736-4679(02)00765-5.

Abstract

This report describes the successful utilization of an endovaginal probe to identify a soft tissue foreign body with the aid of a spacer made from a water-filled latex glove. The report includes a discussion of foreign body localization, the utility of ultrasound, and technical aspects of sonographic foreign body localization. With increasing availability of bedside ultrasound in the Emergency Department, it is likely that sonographic equipment will be utilized in applications outside its primary intended purpose to evaluate the wide range of clinical scenarios encountered in Emergency Medicine.
