J Environ Sci Eng. 2009 Oct;51(4):273-6.

Abstract

Fifty families comprising 244 members residing since last 5 years in the village Degana, Nagaur district, Rajasthan (India) were surveyed for the prevalence of fluorosis. The fluorosis was present among 234 subjects (95.90 percent). Dental and skeletal fluorosis increased progressively with age. Grade I and grade II dental fluorosis was found in 61.11% and 15.38% children of 4-6 years while skeletal fluorosis was observed at the age of 7-9 years (54.54%) and adults (100%). Pain in lower limbs, neck, backbone, joints and inability to perform routine tasks were the common skeletal symptoms prevalent. Severe forms of skeletal fluorosis, i.e. genuvelgum, kyphosis and flexor deformity of bone were also observed. Prevalence of non skeletal fluorosis was 91.95 percent and 100 percent among the people of 18-40 years and 60 plus respectively.
