Older adolescents' perceptions and intentions regarding Do-It-Yourself Genetic Assessment services

J Spec Pediatr Nurs. 2012 Apr;17(2):159-67. doi: 10.1111/j.1744-6155.2012.00329.x.

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this research was to investigate older adolescents' perceptions of Do-It-Yourself Genetic Assessment (DIYGA) services online and factors that influence their intentions to utilize DIYGA services.

Design and methods: A convenience sample of 111 undergraduate students completed an online survey based on the Theory of Planned Behavior.

Results: Most respondents (80.4%) had not heard of DIYGA services. Predictors of intentions to use DIYGA services included attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived risk of developing a genetic disorder.

Practice implications: Nurses are in a unique position to provide much-needed education and guidance to adolescents about genetic testing, particularly given mass media sources were the primary sources of information among these adolescents.
