J Nurs Meas. 2021 Dec 1;29(3):476-490. doi: 10.1891/JNM-D-20-00030. Epub 2020 Oct 16.

Abstract

Background and purpose: The assessment of nurses' professional values (NPVs) in Italian nurses and students is undermined by the unavailability of validated measurements. Therefore, this study aimed at providing the validation of the "Nurses Professional Values Scale-Three" (NPVS-3) in its Italian version (I-NPVS-3).

Methods: The study had a multiphase design: (a) cultural and linguistic validation; (b) content and face validity; (c) construct validity.

Results: I-NPVS-3 showed adequate content validity. Confirmatory factor analysis models supported the three-factorial structure of the I-NPVS-3 (i.e., caring, activism, and professionalism) in explaining data obtained from nurses and nursing students. Furthermore, each domain showed adequate internal consistency.

Conclusions: I-NPVS-3 showed evidence of validity and reliability, being useful for assessing NPVs for educational and research purposes among Italian nurses and nursing students.

Keywords: behaviors; ethics; nursing; professional identity; professional values; validation.
